Dog Island

Black lab wishing for a vacation on Dog Island. The lab is stuck in the studio. A frozen blueberry in the fridge. Don't ask. Just dream on...

Day 137 of the BIG DIG

I know, right? I thought they were done. Forced to stay put. I shall enjoy another cup of coffee as my burly men have blocked my driveway. To hell with running errands. Today I shall meditate on the art of home.

You Never Know...

Last week I ran into a family friend. Out of the blue. A guy I had not seen in probably thirty years. YET I think of Mark Alexander (pictured here waving to me) every day. Why? Kind of random? Way back in the day, when photos were developed in black and white, he took a photo of me sitting on rocks in Frenchman's Bay. Ten year old holding a star fish. Simple black and white photo. Really nothing special, but one of those pictures that has inspired me over the years. Never have I talked to Mark about his photography. Never knew exactly what that image meant to me. Then by a random stroke of luck I spotted Mark on a pair of stilts walking through Harvard Square. As a matter of fact, It had been so long since I had seen him, that I was not sure if I was looking at his father, or brother. Lost for words. Searching for a moment but lost... Thank you Mark Alexander. You probably never knew how much your photo set my course for a journey of photography love.

Seek ALT Route

Ever since late June my home has been on a bi-pass for water. That means that I have a garden hose running from a connector on the street over the curb, onto the sidewalk, and snaking through a small hole in my fence. The hose is connected to a rickety water spicket running into my home. Supplying my home with plenty of water to flush, bathe, and at times waste. I am not really complaining, just saying, that I have been receiving "free" water all this time. The noise coming through my windows all summer has been at times aggravating. The dust and dirt built up on my windows, home and any other surface near the dig, has been, shall we say, less than Martha Stewart clean. The heavy equipment, jack hammering, road closures, and minor inconveniences, like a blocked driveway, have at times caused me to fall into moments of vulgar commentary and critical video postings on the web. But in fact, it's all GOOD. I am blessed to have the water. Blessed that I don't have to risk my life to find water. Blessed that I don't have to walk miles in the heat in order to fetch a pail or two. Thank you for fixing my neighborhood water main oh burly men. I have enjoyed your company this summer. I have been humored by your coffee breaks and horseplay. Now it's time for you to close up the hole, pave the road. And for the love of all things holy, turn off the orange neon blinking sign near my kitchen window!

Starving Artist Sale!

Last night I participated in an Open Studio at Black Crow Yoga in Arlington. Thank you to all my friends who came out on such a muggy night to support me. Observing how my images moved or frankly bored the viewer was an eye opening experience. So often images are viewed on the web, with little feedback. Thank you to the kind lady who wanted to know if I had a coffee table book! Thank you to the critic who smirked and picked one photo apart obviously impressing his date to no end. Fun to hover and watch it all unfold. Cheers to the starving artist! Cheers to your determination and dedication in bringing all sorts of images, textures, and experiences to Arlington!

Camera Shy

My dog Kobe has outwitted me every single time I try to snap an image of him. Young and full of energy, this dog knows how to avoid the photog. Frustrated by continual blurs and bad lighting, I usually retreat to my corner. My assistant, who weighs in at half of Kobe's size, is empathetic toward my pain. Holding a dog treat and mesmerizing the poor animal, my assistant knows the moment has arrived. Good dog. Good photog. Happiness. Now, go lay down. My assistant smiles knowing she has stolen the show.

Dyslexia 101 Thinking Over the Box

Oh how I love this image of my friends Spencer, Miranda and Patty playing in Autumn leaves. The twirling of the leaves over Miranda's face creates disorientation. I like so many dyslexics am constantly trying to make sense of a world that is constantly shifting and changing perspective. Seeing inside the box, outside the box, around the box and over the box is just par of my day.
